West Bengal Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay highlighted the ideals of Bharatiya Jan Sangh’s (BJS) founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the latter’s death anniversary on Tuesday, firmly affirming that the Bharatiya Janata Party government will accord him with due respect in Bengal’s history.

The BJS is the parent organisation of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“Syama Prasad Mookerjee has created the Bengal where we are living today, the Bengal in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has been formed. He had not received his due place in Bengal’s and the country’s history. Now the Bharatiya Janata Party will be accord him with due respect,” Chattopadhyay said.

The Higher Education Minister further affirmed that his party has a practice of “keeping a photo of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee in every booth of our party nationwide.”

“As a Bengali it is a matter of pride for us,” he added.

Speaking about the state government’s initiative of honouring the Hindu nationalist, “Today it’s his death anniversary. We paid him tributes on behalf of the West Bengal government. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will garland Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s statue at Keoratola Mahasashan where his last rites were held.”

Reaffirming Mookerjee’s role in “creating the last homeland for Bengali Hindus,” Chattopadhyay said, “It is the responsibility of the BJP government to give him his due place in Bengal’s history and society.”
